how to repair, replace or refill a missing or sunken concrete floor joint

Tips, techniques and products to fill, level or repair movement joints in concrete slabs

The examples shown below represent simple joint details found in the construction and refurbishment of concrete floors.

Generally, the width/depth ratio should be 1:1 to 1.5:1 subject to a minimum 10mm depth, but always check every material's technical data sheet for product specific advice.  

Sealants which are not designed for direct traffic must be recessed 5-8mm in general. More robust sealants may be finished flush with the traffic surface.

Some products require always require primers, others require primers for use on non-porous substrates only, others on non-porous substrates only and some don't require primers; again always check the product specific technical data sheet. 

All joint sealants and fillers will require you to strip out any old or existing sealant/filler from the joint, ensure the edges of the concrete slab are sound (no loose materials) and free of dust, dirt, grease and oils.

Arbothane 1245 - a tough but flexible polyurethane joint sealant that has excellent adhesion to most common building materials. 

Thioflex 600 - available in a gun grade and pourable grade, this tough elastic polysulphide sealant can accommodate continuous and pronounced cyclic movement. Ideal for use in areas that are difficult to access post-construction and therefore must not fail. Primer required.


Epo-flex VJ (formerly called Resujoint V)- a flexible thixotropic epoxy resin jointing compound best suited for use in stable joints in screeds and self-smoothing screeds - used to seal movement joints in epoxy resin screeds, polyurethane resin screeds, granolithic screeds, polymer screeds, asphalt and concrete.  

Pumexpand P - a polyurethane modified epoxy resin based sealant, ideal for stable joints in resin flooring systems.


Uniseal 200-90 Coldpour - a high performance elastomeric joint sealant that can withstand above average movement and severe climatic conditions. Suitable for use in contraction and expansion joints in yards, hardstandings, petrol stations, fuelling areas, vehicle depots and garage forecourts, roads, hangars, taxiways and runways. Primer required, material appearance black.  


Pumaintain Joint Repair - a rubber modified polyurethane concrete designed for repairing joint arisses that can withstand heavy traffic from forklift trucks and other wheeled vehicles.


Joint fillers enable you to limit the depth of joint sealant, to give an optimum joint width to depth ratio, and prevent the sealant from slumping down in to the joint.

Backing Rod - closed cell foam cord available in different diameters, select a diameter slightly wider than the joint width and press the cord into the joint to the desired depth.

Flexcell - closed cell foam sheets can be cut to fill the full depth of thew concrete slab, allowing enough room for the required depth of sealant above. 

Silica Sand - in some instances it may be possible to fill the joint with silica sand leaving enough room for the appropriate joint sealant above.
