CASE STUDY: Chester Tramways Urban Realm Paving Jointing
CHESTER TRAMWAYS STUDENT ACCOMMODATION COURTYARD
Chester Tramways is high spec student accommodation for the University of Chester, which will be managed by Fresh Student Living – Tramways.
The £20m project comprises five eye-catching blocks of 3-5 storeys grouped around an attractive courtyard. Ensuite studios, and apartments with shared kitchens and social spaces, will house 398 students. This stylish modern development lies close to the centre of Chester and incorporates a section of the historic tramways themselves, which operated from 1878.
Arcon supplied contractor Watkin Jones with a rapid setting flowable paving grout for the extensive high quality hard landscaped central courtyard. The grout is suitable for even heavily trafficked areas and exceeds the requirements of BS 7533. It can be applied quickly and cleanly, being particularly efficient on large-scale areas where big time savings can be realised. Pedestrians can traffic an area where the grout has been applied after just one hour and vehicles after only four hours.
Because the grout is mixed with water on site and surfaces must be pre-soaked as part of the preparation, it can be used in wet conditions as well as dry. It has exceptional bond strength, is shrinkage compensated and is economical especially when used over large areas. Suitable for use with natural stone, concrete flags and clay paviours, the grout does not leave staining or marking. In this project the grout has been used on natural stone paved areas and cobbles that will be trafficked by pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. The historical iron rails have been retained within the cobbled areas as a design feature and a reminder of the site’s past.
